Dear SPC Families,

Advent is here, yet Christmas seems to have already arrived all around us. Society makes Advent even more complicated by the commercial Christmas season that begins immediately after the Halloween costumes are put away. How do we help our children learn that Advent, a season of preparing their hearts for the joy of Jesus, is not simply a month of Christmas activities but rather a period of waiting and yearning for the birth of Jesus and preparing our hearts for the light of the world?

To be fully transparent, sometimes I am not the most patient person. I look forward to having a full house of family and friends on Christmas Day. I love family traditions and look forward to all the activities that go with the Christmas Season. The season of Advent is a struggle for me; I just want to get to the fun, family, and celebration of the birth of Jesus. I want to run to the light before reflecting in the darkness. Each year I prayerfully recommit myself to being present in the weeks of Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace to work on truly reflecting on the light of Jesus in my life. As Catholic educators, one gift we give our children is to allow them to learn and wait for their friend, Jesus. Each year as a school, we do not begin our Christmas celebrations until the last week of school before the break; teachers will focus on Advent rather than the secular and commercial nature of Christmas. I have included some resources that may assist you at home with being present in Advent before fast forwarding to the presents on Christmas Day, for only out of the darkness do we truly understand the joy and gift of the light!

Please Keep our 8th Graders in your Prayers:
Our 8th graders are taking their high school entrance exams at local Catholic High Schools this Saturday. This is a big day as they begin to think about their transition to high school. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers! They will gather tomorrow morning to have a breakfast together sponsored by the room moms and will wear their new high school sweatshirts or colors to celebrate preparing to graduate in the Spring!

Computer Issue Update:
Yesterday I emailed families in grades 3-8 with possible concerns about the Chromebooks and the more-than-usual pop-ups appearing. At no time did the pops ups contain inappropriate information or images. Out of an abundance of caution, we contacted our firewall support team to thoroughly investigate the situation and ensure the safety of our system. They have reiterated that there was NO breach of our servers. The culprit—-World Cup Soccer! Our students were accessing sites to see the updated scores of games, and the pop-ups were not disabled. Given that the sites were in no way inappropriate, our firewall system did not flag them.

Tomorrow is Spirit Wear Day!

Cold Weather Recess – How Do We Decide Whether to Go Out or Stay Inside?
Winter has definitely arrived, and with that comes the eternal question, “will recess be inside or outside?” It is always our priority to have kids get some time to run around and have some fresh air during the day, but we have a system and chart we use to make that determination. Please make sure to send your child with the outerwear necessary to go outside. The chart we use is below.

2022 NDCP Exam Registration Reminder 2022.11.16

Dear SPC Families,

I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving! Just a reminder that the school office is closed next week. I am grateful for each and every one of you who makes SPC the amazing school community it is for our children!

To be honest, I don’t think it was the Taylor Swift presale tickets that broke the internet Tuesday. It was definitely the launch of the SPC 23-24 admissions applications that broke the internet! We are pleased to have so many new families wanting to join our school next year. That said, please note the following timeline for re-enrollment for 2023-2024 school year.

Re-enrollment timeline for 2023-2024
December 19, 2022: Re-enrollment opens for current families; please make sure you know how to log in to FACTS. At this time, you will also receive the 23-24 tuition and the proposed 23-24 school calendar. Look for an email on the 19th with directions.

January 20, 2023: Re-enrollment for 2023-2024 deadline

January 27, 2023: New families who have applied for enrollment will be accepted based on space available after current families register.

TRIMESTER 2 BEGINS:
Tomorrow is the last day of Trimester 1! We will send home report cards on December 1st. 7th and 8th graders will receive their new Electives choices when they return on November 28th.

ADOPT A FAMILY-DEADLINE December 9th-Thank you for the donations!
SPC has a long-standing tradition of partnering with the parish Social Service Ministry to ensure that needy families in our community have a wonderful Christmas. The Adopt-A-Family program will collect funds and purchase gift cards so families can buy their own gifts. Given the timeline for purchasing the gift cards to ensure timely distribution on December 17th, we ask that funds be collected by December 9th.

Please consider donating to the Adopt-A-Family program so our school can continue this beloved tradition this Advent.

100% of these proceeds will go towards the Adopt-A-Family program in our Social Service Ministry.

Please read all the way through the rest of our Thursday Mailing so you don't miss anything that is coming up. We have a lot of activities planned!

Peace,

Dr. Erika Mickelburgh

SPC 8th Grade Class to finish work on Micro-Credential from DePaul University!
Our 8th graders worked on their Catholic Future Leader Micro-Credential for the past two weeks from DePaul University. This leadership program is a 20-hour program supporting students to become leaders. Our students engaged in six days of workshops to inspire success led by DePaul University Faculty. Students have worked collaboratively on their choice of a leadership project and will be awarded a micro-credential. During the first week of December, each 8th-grade homeroom will travel to DePaul University to present their work in front of DePaul Faculty. This program supports the distinct excellence of Catholic Schools and addresses the goals of Catholic Identity. We are fortunate that the Schreiber Family Foundation, in partnership with DePaul University, is making this amazing opportunity available to our students.

Whole Brain Living In School Environments: Parents and Faculty come together!
Thank you to those parents and faculty who participated in the Whole Brain Living workshops through DePaul University. Teachers and parents came together for the last two sessions to discuss what they learned and how to partner with each other to share these strategies with our children. Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, Author and Harvard-trained neuroscientist, even joined us to answer questions from our group. What an excellent collaboration! Mrs. Quinn has several copies of Whole Brain Living; please email her if you’d like one sent home.

The SPC Life Team is collecting food donations for migrant families staying in local hotels seeking asylum in the US. The food needs to be microwavable. We will be collecting donations of microwavable mac-n-cheese, microwavable Campbell’s chicken soup, and microwavable Chef Boyardee the week of November 7-11th. Please send the donations to your student's classroom.

Cardinal Cupich, along with Catholic Charities, is working to provide shelter, food and support to the asylum seekers as they wait for their hearings. These are legal immigrants who have applied for asylum in our country, because if they go home to their country of origin they will be tortured or killed for their beliefs, faith, etc. Let us continue to help the most vulnerable.
