Dear SPC Families,

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! We are all so grateful for your kindness and generosity in showing your appreciation for our faculty and staff this week. We are blessed to partner with you in your child's education. We are truly blessed at St. Paul of the Cross with amazing teachers! Teaching in a Catholic school is a vocation, and our teachers answer the call to serve daily! At a recent Leadership Day, Cardinal Cupich spoke about the role of Catholic school educators with reference to a quote from St. Teresa of Avila:

"Christ has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours."

Our teachers are truly the body of Christ on earth, and we are grateful for their service.

First Communions Begin This Weekend

This weekend we begin the First Communion Celebrations! Let us all hold in our prayers the 2nd graders as they receive the Sacrament of First Communion; these are special times for our students and families!

May Crowning May 18th
All students in grades 1-8 will attend May Crowning Mass at 1:30. Due to space considerations, only 2 guests of 2nd and 8th grade (2 only) are allowed to attend. 2nd and 8th Grade families, please look to the classroom newsletters for grade level specific directions.

Art Show Save the Date, May 22nd
Come see some amazing SPC student art! May 22nd in the gym from 12:00-3:00 pm. See below for more details.

VIP DAY PARKING: Special Parking Instructions for VIP day Tomorrow, May 6th

Since we anticipate our parking lots to be very full tomorrow, we ask for a little help! If your child(ren)'s VIP can be dropped off, that would be extremely helpful.

The main parking lot is open; however, there is 8:30 mass along with a 10:00 and 12:00 funeral. There will be an area blocked off for the funeral parking. The small parking lot off of Ridge Terrace will be open for parking, along with street parking and the metered railroad track parking spaces. Please note that these are pay parking spots, and you will be ticketed if you do not pay.

We ask that you please be respectful of our neighbors at Ryan-Parke funeral home and FM Global across the street from the UGC. They do not allow visitors to park there on weekdays as their lots are open only for their employees.

We know this might be a difficult situation, but we sincerely appreciate your help and cooperation.

VIP Day! (Very Important Person Day) Tomorrow, May 6th
We look forward to hosting VIP day tomorrow! Please note this is not Grandparents Day; students may choose any special person to come and share an activity together. For students inviting their grandparents, please inform them that this year's format is completely different than in years past. Please note the following:

  • Each student will be able to bring 1 VIP to school.
  • VIPs will report to the classrooms at the assigned time for some refreshment and activity. The activities will only last about an hour.
  • It will be a full day of school; students will return to class after the VIP activities.
  • Unfortunately, the 2nd floor of the EGC is not handicap accessible. This impacts K-2nd grade.

Final Schedule:

8:15-9:00 Early Childhood Classroom Activity (preschool, PreK, Multiage, Kindergarten)

9:10-10:10 1st, 2nd in classrooms

10:20-11:20 3rd-4th and 5th in Gym for Bingo

Altar Serving Information from Mike Marrese
I am a long time parishioner of St. Paul of the Cross and have volunteered to assist Father Nick with the Altar Server Program.

If your son and/or daughter wishes to participate in this ministry, we ask that the attached application be filled out and returned to the rectory (parish office) ASAP. You can also scan and email me the completed application. Please make sure that the field pertaining to agreeing to the training is checked.

You can expect your son or daughter to serve starting this summer every month or two (this depends on the number of total servers we have). Also, your son or daughter will rotate through the entire mass schedule. For example, if your son or daughter is scheduled to serve at 7:30 am, the next time they are assigned, they will serve at 9:00 am, the next time after that at 10:30 am, etc.

I make the schedule and will assist you with any requests to switch a date or a need for a substitute.

We have two (2) days of training that your son or daughter must attend. They are Monday, 5/16, 3:00-4:00pm and Monday, 5/23, 3:00-4:00pm. Both days are in the St. Paul of the Cross Church.

Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me by email or cell. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

God Bless,

Mike Marrese
