Dear SPC Families,

Thank you in advance for reading this newsy letter! There are many details regarding construction and our speaker next week. I truly hope you will all attend the evening session, which is designed for parents to attend with their student. The evening is a valuable opportunity to learn with your child. Jodee Blanco is a nationally known speaker and a frequent collaborator in Catholic Schools and NCEA on bullying prevention.

A reminder that this weekend is the Parish Picnic, I hope to see you all there!

Included in this week's letter:

  • Construction on the Kinane Center--impact to drop off
  • Catholic High School Fair--NEW EVENING TIME!
  • High School Placement Test Prep offered at SPC
  • Study Hall for 7th and 8th Grade
  • Vaping-the dangers and some resources
  • Jodee Blanco Schedule for September 10th.
  • Family Mass Schedule

Construction Beginning on the Kinane Center
Effective September 9th, the construction will begin on the Kinane Center. While this will not impact drop off or pick up along Ridge Terrace, you will not be able to use the small “Tiger Parking” lot for dropping off. The sidewalk in front of the Kinane Center will also be closed. We anticipate the construction to take 6 months.

Save the Date: Catholic High School Fair Moves to the Evening

We have moved this event to the evening to allow parents to come talk to representatives of Catholic High Schools with their child. This is open to families in grades 6-8. Study Hall Option During Recess for 7th and 8th Grade
Based on feedback from some of our students, we have decided to offer a study hall during recess for our 7th and 8th graders on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Students should see their homeroom teacher in the morning to sign up study hall. There are limited seats available and students can only sign up for a day at a time. If a student fails to show up for 2 study hall sessions that they reserved, they will lose the study hall privilege for the remainder of the trimester. It is the student’s responsibility to reserve their spot, parent requests via email to the homeroom teacher will not be honored.

VAPING: A DANGEROUS EPIDEMIC AMONG MIDDLE-HIGH SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN
In recent weeks we have seen tragic vaping related deaths in the news. Last year, we hosted a parent education session in the evening that was surprisingly poorly attended. Given the recent deaths and the continual research on the impact of vaping on the body, this is an issue that we must be mindful of. We will be hosting another session for both students and parents in the upcoming months. In the meantime please take some time to read these articles and discuss the dangers of vaping with your middle school children. As soon as we have secured our speakers, we will provide you advance notice of the parent workshop.

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are invited to join the SPC Life Team!

The team is sponsored by the Parish Respect Life Committee and our mission is to live the Gospel of Life through service to the most vulnerable: the unborn, those with special needs, the poor, the elderly, etc. Our goal is to live out the social justice teaching of respecting the life and dignity of every human person. Although the team was just created in January, we had overwhelming participation and were able to serve the community in a variety of life-affirming ways. This school year, our first activity will be to help with the Baby Bottle project during Respect Life month (October).

Our first meeting of the year will be next Wednesday, September 11th at 11:30 am in the A/B room. We would love to see your kids there!

Updated Website
The school website had its much needed upgrades over the summer. One big enhancement is that you can now download the school calendar and sync it to your phone!

Does My Child Need Social Media in Middle School?
I actually get this question quite often; what are your thoughts on social media? Do you allow your child access to social media? Let me preface my statements by saying that I think the most valuable thing parents can do is talk to one another. We often get tired of hearing our kids say “I am the only one in the entire universe who is not on Snapchat and Instagram” and we cave in to the pressure. This article has been floating around for some time and offers some food for thought and conversation in your home. Click here.

A Reminder About the School Day Schedule
This year the school day starts at 8:00am each day. Students need to be in their classrooms by 8:00am.  Students in the EGC will be marked tardy after 8:05. Students in the UGC will be marked tardy after 8:00am. The doors in both the UGC and the EGC will be open at 7:45am each morning to allow plenty of time to get to homeroom. Drop off lines will also begin at 7:45. We will continue to dismiss all students at 3:00pm.

We know it will take some getting used to so we will not issue tardies until after Labor Day!

Milk
Our milk program will begin the Tuesday after Labor Day (September 3rd.) If you have not yet done so, please make sure your milk form and payment is returned to us by tomorrow as it was due Wednesday, August 28th.

I think we may have a new tradition here at SPC with the “Teacher Meet and Greet/Supply Drop Off” evening. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to meet their new teacher and enjoy some ice cream!  It was a good way to start the school year and I was so excited to see all of you after your summer vacation!

New this year we have completely revamped our Upper Grade schedule. This week our students and faculty have been learning the ropes and finding their way around. This is new for everyone and I am happy to say that as we all find our bearings, there have been very few glitches!

This is a busy letter this week with many back to school reminders. Happy reading!

When I Ask My Child About Their Day All I Hear is “Fine.”
How many times do we sit down at dinner to ask our kids about their day at school and are a little disappointed to hear “it was fine”? I stumbled upon an article a few years ago that I like to share at the beginning of each school year as a reminder that if we pose the question differently, we may get better responses from our children that lead to great conversations about their day. I encourage you to try a few different questions with your child. Click here.

A Note About the School Day Schedule
This year the school day starts at 8:00am each day. Students need to be in their classrooms by 8:00am.  Students in the EGC will be marked tardy after 8:05. Students in the UGC will be marked tardy after 8:00am. The doors in both the UGC and the EGC will be open at 7:45am each morning to allow plenty of time to get to homeroom. Drop off lines will also begin at 7:45. We will continue to dismiss all students at 3:00pm.

We know it will take some getting used to so we will not issue tardies until after Labor Day!

Bus Service
Bus service for our students will begin on Monday, August 26th. If you have not received an email from us regarding your stop and times, you were not registered with the district. You must contact them in order to see if you qualify for bus service. The District 64 bus rep is Stephanie Colon. Her email address is: This email address is being protected from spambots. Milk
Our milk program will begin the Tuesday after Labor Day (September 3rd.) Please make sure your milk and payment is returned to us by Wednesday, August 28th.

No Parking in FM Global Parking Lot
Please remember that parents are not allowed to park in the FM Global Parking Lot (the parking lot across from our big lot on Washington). We know that you are allowed to park there on Sundays for Mass but parking is not allowed on school days.

No Parking in Ryan Parke Funeral Home During the Day
A reminder that you are allowed to park in the funeral home parking lot to drop off your children or pick your children up.  Please do not park there if you need to leave your car there after 8:00am. Also, when you see the cones up (even in the rear lots) you will have to seek parking elsewhere due to a service at the funeral home.

Puerto Rico 2020!
We are very excited to announce that in February of 2020 we will be offering a service trip to Puerto Rico visiting and working with the Our Lady of the Rosary Parish. In 2017, St. Paul of the raised money during the Lenten Mission to rebuild the damaged church of Our Lady of the Rosary Church. However, there is still work that needs to be done. We will be assisting at Our Lady of the Rosary Church and School. We will also have time to learn about the culture and history of Puerto Rico---and even have some fun! This trip is open to all 7th and 8th grade students. Parents are also eligible to attend the trip. St. Paul of the Cross Puerto Rico 2020.pdf

In order to plan ahead, please RSVP to a parent information meeting on August 28th at 5:30 in the AB Room. Click here to RSVP.

From The Parish

We have an active and vibrant parish and encourage everyone to read the weekly bulletins for Fr. Britto's weekly letter and to stay informed about all of the upcoming events and programs. Parish Bulletin for August 25, 2019

Dear SPC Families,

I pray that you all had a restful and wonderful summer! It is hard to believe that the start of school is a few short weeks away. The faculty returns for a week of professional development and planning on August 12th and will be eagerly awaiting the arrival of their new classes! In the meantime, I want to update you on new programs, our new faculty and grade level assignments, and also give you a friendly reminder about forms and dates. Our weekly Thursday mailing will resume on August 15th.

We have had a busy summer here at SPC! I feel tremendously blessed that we have hired outstanding new teachers. We have also seen great growth in our early childhood program and recently added a part time preschool room. New curriculum has arrived for social studies and foreign language and the classrooms and hallways are sparkly clean.

While I am sorry to see summer slowly coming to an end, I am excited to have the hallways and classrooms full of joy and learning. More importantly, I am looking forward to a wonderful school year! I hope you enjoy reading about some exciting new updates and reminders below.

Social Work/Counseling Services
In May 2019 District 64 informed us that they would no longer be providing social work services. Given that the social and emotional support of our students is important to us, we were faced with looking for an alternative plan. We are pleased to announce that we are partnering with United Stand Counseling Services this year. United Stand counselors will be at school 2 days a week to provide social and emotional support to our students.

WELCOME NEW SPC FACULTY:
We are very excited to welcome some wonderful new faculty members. They are eager to meet their new students and families!

Mrs. Megan Dietz
PART-TIME PRESCHOOL TEACHER
My name is Megan Dietz and I am super excited to join the St. Paul of the Cross family as the new part time preschool teacher! I grew up and currently live on the Northwest side of Chicago. I attended Catholic elementary school and went to Resurrection High School. After high school, I found a love and passion for teaching, which led me to earn my Bachelors degree in Education from Northeastern Illinois University. During college, I taught preschool aged children at a daycare center, which only made my love for teaching grow. I then went on to teach kindergarten and third grade. After about 6 years of teaching, I chose to stay home for a few years to raise my young daughters- Molly, Evelyn, and Lucy. I am now so excited to be back at teaching, especially in such a wonderful school. I look forward to being part of this fantastic community.

Ms. Stefanie Xamplas
PREKINDERGARTEN TEACHER
Stefanie is excited to join the St. Paul of the Cross. She has her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from National Louis University. Stefanie has taught both Kindergarten and 3-year-old Pre-K. She loves to spend her time with her 3 kids, Alex (14), Lauren (12), and Christina (10). Stefanie grew up in Park Ridge and now resides in Glenview. Very happy to be back in Park Ridge!  Stefanie loves to travel and is enjoying the summer off with her kids making memories!

LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER
Erin Guarnieri is thrilled to be part of the St. Paul of the Cross community! She has her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and her Bachelor’s degree in English, History, and Religious Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mrs. Becky Zimmerman
MATH TEACHER
I am excited to join the St. Paul of the Cross community.  I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum Development. Before I took time to stay home with my children, I taught 4th and 5th grade for 7 years. I returned to teaching three years ago and am excited to teach at St. Paul of the Cross. In my free time, I like to spend time with my husband, Steve, and our four children; Olivia, Maura, Sam and Erin. I also like to garden, go to my kids’ events and be involved with Girl Scouts.

Mrs. Stephanie Golden
SCIENCE & STEM TEACHER
Stephanie is very excited to be joining St. Paul community. She will be entering her fifteenth year of teaching, with experience mainly in middle grades teaching Math, Digital Literacy, and STEAM.  She can’t wait to teach 4th and 5th grade Science along with STEAM classes. Her Bachelor’s degree is in Elementary Education and English and she will be starting her Masters in Educational Leadership at Concordia University this fall.

She lives in Edison Park with her husband and four children, including her stepson who currently attends St. Paul. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, coaching basketball, and cooking.

Mr. Joshua Warner
THEOLOGY TEACHER
It’s with great enthusiasm that Joshua joins the St. Paul community. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Theology, along with a minor in Catholic Social Teaching, from the University of Notre Dame. Following university, he lived in many different varieties of intentional, simple-living communities, serving as a Catholic Worker before living for seven years as a Trappist Monk. His teaching career, entering its seventh year, began at Loyola Academy, continuing most recently as Campus Minister and Religious Studies instructor at the Southeast side’s St. Francis de Sales High School. He looks forward to his work as St. Paul of the Cross School’s new Middle School Religion teacher and Campus Minister.

He lives in Glendale Heights.  He’s engaged to be married, and spends his free time writing poetry, reading the great classics of Chinese Zen, and wishing he could read them in the original language.

Mrs. Melinda Meo
MATH TEACHER
Melinda is excited to join St. Paul of the Cross teaching 6th-8th grade math.  Most recently, Melinda taught Algebra 2 at St. Eugene School. Prior to that, Melinda spent most of her career at Guerin College Prep High School in River Grove where she taught all levels of high school math including Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Geometry.  Melinda enjoys incorporating technology into her lessons and finding new techniques to help her students reach their full potential.

Melinda received her Bachelor’s degree in Education from National Louis University and her Master’s degree in Teacher Leadership from North Park University. Melinda is married and has one son who will be starting Fenwick in the fall.
