January 12, 2023

Dear SPC Families,

I hope you all had a beautiful Christmas and New Year!  While I enjoyed the vacation, it is great to get back in the routine of school; and my goodness, we were blessed with great January weather early in the week. We even squeezed in a fire drill on Wednesday!

Today we had incredible news from NASA!!!  Our 6th-grade students won the NASA TechRise Challenge again! The winning team, "Illinois Icons", includes Neala D, Meili M, Chloe N, Angelica L, and Lola S. St. Paul of the Cross is one of 60 winning TechRise teams around the country. Please join me in congratulating the "Illinois Icons" and our STEAM teacher, Dr. Karl Ochsner!

NASA is supporting the development and demonstration of our payload called the "Solar Panels in the Stratosphere." This year's challenge focused on environmental research in developing technologies near the edge of space by developing an experiment proposal for this year’s NASA TechRise flight vehicle – the high-altitude balloon! The high-altitude balloon flight will offer more than four hours of flight time at 70,000 feet and provides exposure to Earth’s atmosphere plus views of our planet.

The team will be awarded $1,500 to build their experiment, a flight box in which to build it, and an assigned spot to test their experiment on a NASA-sponsored balloon flight.

Next week we will administer the Winter IReady diagnostic; please note the specific grade level dates on your weekly newsletters.

Finally, a reminder to those who are turning left out of the parking lot either after drop-off or pickup. The sign is clearly marked .. NO left turn. This is a safety concern for our students, and the Park Ridge Police will ticket.

Peace,

Dr. Erika Mickelburgh
