Susan Dohr

Welcome to Mrs. Dohr’s Preschool Room 135!

Educational Background:
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Marquette University
Master of Arts in Teaching Early Childhood Education from National Louis University

Teaching Experience:
This is my second year teaching at St. Paul of the Cross, 15th year overall. I most recently taught Preschool at St. John Brebeuf for 6 years. Previously, I taught 3rd grade at St. Henry's and Preschool at Northside Catholic Academy but then took some time away from the classroom to raise my 4 children. During that time, I had the opportunity to teach early childhood classes at the Park Ridge Park District while my children were young.

Preschool News

Happy New Year!  We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing Christmas break.  Let 2018 bring us all joy and happiness!  We look forward to coming back refreshed and getting started with this new year!  As we return after break, we will turn our classroom into a winter wonderland filled with snowmen, mittens, and arctic animals.  We may not wish for cold, but we do hope to have some snow outside, it makes it very exciting for the young ones.  Keep dressing them ready for going outside.  We will go outside, even briefly, if the weather permits.  We will also be continuing with our letter of the week.  Attached are the January calendar and snack suggestions just for reference.  As you can see, there is plenty of winter fun for us to explore with the children this month.  Please help your child come up with some fun outfits for the specific dates below.  When the month comes to an end, we will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week with a variety of fun activities.  There will be an open house on January 28th as we kick off CSW.  Stay tuned for more info.

School doors will open at 7:50 and the students will come in on their own.

  • Children are allowed to come in as they arrive.

  • Doors open at 7:50am, and children may come in either through the safe zone door or the door off of Ridge Terrace (after the first week). A teacher/aide always stands both at the door and in the hallway while the children are coming into the school.

  • We will take your child even if he/she is crying.  Parents are not allowed to come in.  If your child will not let go, the teacher/aide will help to take the child.

Dismissal:

  • Half day children will always be dismissed out the door facing Ridge Terrace.  It is the door closer to Northwest Hwy but on Ridge Terrace.  We will be coming out there at 11:30am.

  • Full day children will always be dismissed out the door facing Ridge Terrace. It is the door closer to Northwest Hwy but on Ridge Terrace.  We will be coming out there at 3:00.

  • If your child is going to be picked up by someone other than yourself, contact the teacher by email or a note giving us permission to release your child.

Attendance:

  • If you know your child will be absent or tardy, please email the teacher and the front desk.

  • I will be checking emails between the times of 7:30-7:50 and then again at lunch.  I will not have access to a computer during the school hours because I will be busy with your children.  If it is an emergency you can contact the office or call my room directly.

Bathroom:

  • All children entering preschool must be potty trained.  Please dress your child in clothing they can manipulate on their own.  They must be able to pull up their own pants, zip, and/or button them.

  • If your son is not familiar with urinals please have him visit one over the weekend so it is not an issue on Monday.

Snack:

  • Each family will be assigned a snack week. You are responsible for supplying a nutritional snack, and any utensils, if needed for the entire class the whole week.

  • You will be asked to make sure your snacks will cover a week’s worth. If you could please provide a variety of snacks for the week that would be wonderful.  Please see our approved snack list.  We have 26 preschoolers.

  • You will have the option for your child to receive milk or water during snack time.  Since the children do not drink a full carton of milk the school does not charge the full price for milk.  If you would like your child to receive milk during snack time only please complete the attached permission slip with the $5 payment for the year.

Clothing:

  • Dress your child in comfortable play clothes so that they are able to sit on the floor, do art projects, and participate in gym class.

  • The following shoes are not allowed: cowboy boots, flip flops, clogs, and open toe.

  • We have a lot of fun and are quite messy, so the less fancy the clothes the better.

  • In case of an accident or a messy project, please keep an extra change of clothes (underwear, pants, socks, shirt) in your child’s backpack.  Please keep clothing up to date with the changing seasons.  Please label the bag with your child’s name.

Backpacks, Folders & Communications:

  • Every child will need a folder as a means of communication between home & school.

Please check your child’s folder DAILY, and remove all paperwork.

  • Also, Please help your child to remember to bring their backpack and folder to school daily.

  • We will email a monthly calendar & a biweekly newsletter with announcements and reminders about the fun activities taking place in our classroom and at SPC School.

Birthdays:

  • We will celebrate birthdays with a birthday crown and singing the Happy Birthday Song.  NO BIRTHDAY TREATS!  Your child can bring in a trinket for the class as long as it is not edible.  Invitations may be sent to school to be passed out as long as the whole class is invited, or all the boys are invited together and all the girls are invited together.

Gym:

  • Once a week (weather permitting) we will go to the gym for 20 minutes.  Please make sure your child wears gym shoes on that day.  Gym day will be on Friday.

Spanish:

  • We will be having Spanish on Wednesday.  The Spanish class will be 20 minutes once a week. The day will be put on the calendar.

Music:

  • We will have music on Thursday for about 20 minutes. The day will be put on the calendar.

Show & Tell:

  • We will have Show & Tell.  See monthly Calendar for Show & Tell topics. This will be after Christmas.

Recharge time: Full day students only:

  • If your child is staying all day, right after lunch will be a recharge time for the children.  It will be for 30-40 minutes.  The children will lay down and just rest.  Sometimes they do fall asleep and sometimes they do not.  All children staying full day will be asked to bring a beach towel or small towel to be used only during recharge time.

Looking forward to a great year!

Mrs. Dohr and Mrs. Nocita
